Does SYSPRO Have Finite Capacity Scheduling? Forward Finite Scheduling vs SkyPlanner APS
SYSPRO has one finite tool in its core: Forward Finite Scheduling in Requirements Planning. It loads jobs into daily work center capacity on a copy of MRP data, while MRP itself assumes infinite capacity. Detailed sequencing per machine sits in separately licensed products. Plants that need every machine, person, tool and material scheduled finitely run SkyPlanner APS beside SYSPRO.
This article covers SYSPRO 8 with the 2026 R1 help. Many pages that rank for SYSPRO scheduling describe SYSPRO 7, so check the version before you rely on a screen.
How SYSPRO plans capacity, step by step
1. Capacity master data
Capacity starts on the Work Center. You set the number of productive units, the time per unit per day and the normal capacity per unit. Machines are assigned to a work center in Machine Maintenance. Each work center has a Capacity Calendar, and Shift Pattern Maintenance holds shifts. In 2026 R1 a shift pattern can also record which machines a work center uses per shift.
2. Structures and Routings
The Bill of Materials module holds Structures and Routings. The structure lists components. The routing lists operations, each with:
- the work center
- setup time, run time, queue time and move time
- Maximum units
- for subcontract operations, Offsite Days and Dock to Stock Days
3. Requirements Planning: infinite by design
The Requirements Calculation builds a snapshot and suggests jobs and purchase orders. MRP Job Review turns suggested jobs into live jobs. SYSPRO’s help is explicit about capacity. The Requirements Calculation “assumes infinite capacity and does not, therefore, schedule jobs according to the actual available capacity in each work center.” (source)
4. Forward Finite Scheduling: the finite part
Forward Finite Scheduling (Requirements Planning > Forward Finite Scheduling) reschedules existing and suggested jobs against available work center capacity. Where a work center is full, it adds queue time. Demands it cannot meet go to an error report.
Capacity is a daily number: “Capacity available on a day is calculated as follows: A x B x C.” A is the work center calendar capacity, B the overtime % and C the utilization %. The run “uses the snapshot data created/copied by the Requirements Calculation.” (source)
5. Date calculation in Job Entry
Each job gets dates from one of these methods in Job Entry:
| Method | What it does |
|---|---|
| Delivery date to be calculated | Forward from the start date, infinite |
| Start date to be calculated | Backward from the delivery date, infinite |
| Finite scheduled delivery date | Forward trial load into free capacity; requires WIP load levelling |
| Manual | The planner enters the dates |
A finite trial load locks resources and can create _TMP jobs in the WipMaster table. (source)
6. Load Levelling and Capacity Loading
Load Levelling analyzes work center utilization and flags overloaded work centers. The planner then adjusts capacity for overtime, breakdowns or absenteeism. The Capacity Loading report shows load by day, week or month.
7. SYSPRO’s separately licensed schedulers
Detailed scheduling in SYSPRO comes from add-on products:
- SYSPRO Factory Scheduling, documented in SYSPRO 7 help and based on Preactor, has three tiers. The entry tier, Graphical Planning Board, “considers only the main resource (machine) required for an operation as a constraint.” Finite Scheduler adds secondary resources such as operator teams, and Advanced Scheduler adds material availability.
- SYSPRO MOM includes Visual APS, a Visual Planning Board with drag-and-drop scheduling. It has its own license file and seats. SYSPRO’s help describes it as software on the computer where it is installed, reading jobs, Stock Codes, work centers and machines from the SYSPRO SQL database.
- APS (Nexsys) reached end of sale on 31 December 2025 and reaches end of life on 31 December 2026. (SYSPRO product lifecycle)
What stays with the planner
- MRP ignores capacity. Every Requirements Calculation plans at infinite capacity (quoted above).
- Day buckets, not a sequence. Forward Finite Scheduling fills daily capacity on a work center. It does not decide which job runs first on which machine.
- Planning on a copy. The finite run works on the MRP snapshot, not on live job status.
- Started work breaks the run. SYSPRO traces the error to “the forward finite scheduler trying to load a started operation onto the work center, which does not fit.”
- SYSPRO’s own warning. “The planner should not use forward finite mode unless already working with dynamic elapsed times and a realistic base capacity profile.” (source)
- Calendars only block days in infinite mode. “The work center capacity calendar is used only to establish non-working days.”
- Overdue work drops out of view. “Load levelling does not identify available capacity for any day prior to the current date.” (source)
- Setups do not depend on sequence. Each routing operation has one setup time, whatever ran on the machine before.
When SYSPRO’s native scheduling is enough
Core SYSPRO does the job when:
- You need MRP suggestions and a weekly view of overloaded work centers.
- Queue time in day buckets is accurate enough for your delivery promises.
- One machine per work center, or interchangeable machines, is the norm.
- Changeovers are short or do not depend on the product that ran before.
- Operators, shared tools and material arrival do not decide the order of work.
If that fits, keep calendars and elapsed times realistic and run Forward Finite Scheduling after each Requirements Calculation.
When you need a finite capacity scheduler
You have outgrown the core tools when several of these are true:
- Delivery dates slip although the Capacity Loading report looks fine by week.
- The planner resequences jobs by hand after every rush job or breakdown.
- Changeover time depends on which product ran before.
- Operators, shifts and absences limit output as much as machines do.
- Dies, molds or fixtures move between machines.
- Late material decides which job can start.
- You run APS (Nexsys), which reaches end of life on 31 December 2026.
What to look for
- Every resource finite at once: machines, people and tools, not daily work center totals.
- Operation-level sequencing by priorities and due dates.
- A setting time matrix with sequence-dependent, asymmetric changeover times.
- Tools as finite shared resources and multi-operator jobs.
- Material-aware scheduling that checks stock and incoming purchase orders.
- Automatic rescheduling when production progress or orders change.
- A clean SYSPRO data path. Reads through e.net Business Objects or the OData service, writes through e.net Business Objects. Ask every vendor how dates reach your jobs and who supports it after go-live.
The options fall into four groups:
- SYSPRO core planning loads work centers by day inside SYSPRO.
- SYSPRO add-on schedulers (Factory Scheduling tiers, MOM Visual APS) are separately licensed SYSPRO products.
- Enterprise APS suites are connected through an implementation project and run by a planning team.
- Cloud APS with shop-floor execution, where SkyPlanner sits, schedules every resource automatically beside SYSPRO and puts the plan in operators’ hands.
Where SkyPlanner fits
SkyPlanner APS closes each gap listed above. Every workstation, person and tool is finite. The Arcturus AI engine builds an operation-level schedule in seconds, sequenced by job priority, completion date, customer priority, Fast Track and Dynamic Priorities.
Its setting time matrix holds the changeover time between each pair of products in both directions, and the engine picks the order with the least setup. Tools are finite shared resources, several people can work the same job at once, and work moves to alternative machines or personnel when the primary one is unavailable.
Material-driven scheduling simulates future inventory from stock and incoming purchase orders, so a job is planned when its material is there. Autopilot reschedules automatically when production changes, and Running Time Lock freezes the next hours of work so the floor is not disrupted. Operators log work on phone or tablet with Mobile Confirmations, Production Timer and Quick Log Mode.
Choose SkyPlanner over SYSPRO MOM and Visual APS when:
- You need a live schedule in weeks. SYSPRO names MOM as the successor to APS (Nexsys), and Visual APS is installed against your SYSPRO SQL Server with its own license. SkyPlanner is cloud software you test on your own jobs in the trial and run live within weeks after onboarding starts.
- The plan must keep itself current. In Visual APS the planner reschedules tasks or resolves errors when jobs do not fit (SYSPRO help). Autopilot replans automatically on every meaningful change.
- Changeovers, tools, crews and material decide the sequence. The setting time matrix, finite tools, multi-operator jobs, alternative workstations and purchase-order arrivals sit in one schedule.
- Every operator should see the plan. MOM Workbench access needs a seat per manufacturing employee in Smart Manager. SkyPlanner users are unlimited, and Mobile Confirmations put the queue on every phone or tablet.
Start with an Excel export of open SYSPRO jobs in the 30-day free trial (up to 20 workstations, no credit card). After that, pricing is from 199 € per month with 5 workstations included, billed monthly. The integration is quoted up front for your process and needs, together with your plan.
SkyPlanner integrates with SYSPRO in both directions through e.net Business Objects and the SYSPRO OData service. The SkyPlanner team configures it during onboarding, and your partner or developers can work on the documented REST API. See the SkyPlanner for SYSPRO page, the SYSPRO integration guide or all ERP integrations.

FAQ
Does SYSPRO have a scheduling tool?
Yes. Core SYSPRO has Forward Finite Scheduling, Job Entry date calculation and Load Levelling. They load work centers by day rather than sequencing machines. Detailed scheduling comes from separately licensed products such as SYSPRO Factory Scheduling and SYSPRO MOM.
Is SYSPRO MRP infinite capacity?
Yes. SYSPRO’s help states that the Requirements Calculation assumes infinite capacity. Forward Finite Scheduling is a separate run that loads the MRP snapshot into daily work center capacity.
What replaces SYSPRO APS (Nexsys)?
APS (Nexsys) is end of life on 31 December 2026. SkyPlanner APS replaces it as a cloud scheduler that reads your SYSPRO jobs and writes planned dates back. You can test it on your own jobs before the cut-off.
Does SYSPRO handle sequence-dependent setup times?
Not in core SYSPRO. Each routing operation carries one setup time, whatever ran before. SkyPlanner’s setting time matrix stores changeover times between product pairs in both directions and sequences jobs to minimize them.
Can I test SkyPlanner before integrating it with SYSPRO?
Yes. Import open jobs, routings and work centers from SYSPRO as Excel or CSV during the 30-day trial and compare the schedule with your current plan. See pricing, start the trial or talk to sales.
